  • Do I need a prescription from my doctor?
Yes, this is preferred and best practice, however this can be discussed further during your free consultation. Each state has individual guidelines on what is permitted. For mobile physical therapy services in New York State, licensed physical therapists are permitted to perform an evaluation and provide physical therapy for 30 days or 10 visits (whichever comes first) without a prescription from a physician. We can assist you in the process of obtaining a prescription if needed. Wellness and fitness programs do not require a physician's prescription.
  • What do I need to video chat?
Access to an internet connected smart phone, tablet, or computer. Click the link provided by your therapist to access your session. It is helpful to have someone available to hold your device for certain aspects of the initial evaluation. Technology not your thing? Don’t worry! We will provide detailed, easy-to-follow instructions upon booking your appointment. In addition, your therapist at Engage is always here to help.
  • What is the difference between the free consultation, initial evaluation, and treatment sessions?"
The free consultation will include several questions about your past medical history and what your specific goals are to make sure this is the best fit for you. If we decide it would be best to receive therapy in person and you live outside of central NY, we can help you find a local therapist. The initial evaluation will include a more thorough review of medical history, medications, and goals. This will include an assessment of different functional tasks to achieve a baseline and a plan will be created for treatment. This evaluation will take about an hour. A treatment session can last between 30 to 60 minutes and will focus on your goals.
  • What is the difference between physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy?"
All three therapies focus on improving well being and function in daily life. Physical therapy (PT) will focus on mobility, walking, strength, balance, and flexibility. Occupational therapy (OT) will focus on developing strategies to make everyday activities easier, safer and less stressful. Speech therapy (ST) can focus on speech, language, cognition, communication, voice and swallowing. One of the benefits of Engage is that if you would benefit from different types of therapy, we will collaborate and coordinate to maximize therapy.
  • Can my family members be involved?
Yes, it is encouraged to have family or friends involved in sessions. This can be helpful to maximize strategies discussed during a session and performing exercises.
  • Do you have a cancellation policy?
We understand life happens and you may need to miss a scheduled appointment. However, please be considerate and provide adequate notice if you cannot make it. When you late cancel, we are unable to give that appointment to someone else who needs our assistance. Patients who late cancel or no show will be charged a fee for the missed appointment. Therapists are paid by insurance for time spent treating patients; insurance does not pay for missed appointments or late arrivals. Illnesses and emergencies are addressed on an individual basis. Please contact our office manager if you have any questions. We understand during the winter in Syracuse there will be winter storms. We stay open unless there is a weather-related travel ban. If you do not feel comfortable driving due to weather related conditions, teletherapy is always an option. Please discuss this with your therapist so you can easily switch your appointment. Fees If you late cancel or no show, the fee will be collected at your next appointment. If no visit is scheduled, a bill will be mailed to you. · Late cancellations (less than 24 hours)– $50 per incident · No shows – $100 per incident
